Jasmine and Alex have discovered Canberra’s soul and created a home of joy and light in Hackett.
Moving to Canberra from Tasmania, it took some time for them to find their place in our planned city. Our well laid out streets, suburban landscape and young aesthetic can feel soul-less and disconnected if you don’t know where to look.
It is unsurprising that it is in Hackett Jasmine and Alex have found their joyful place and their newfound love of Canberra is infectious and heartfelt.
Their brick house on Mackenzie Street is a joyfully warm and inviting home. Flooded with light through large windows, it exemplifies the hope of the mid-century where design had an uncomplicated fresh aesthetic. Modern style and convenience are characterised by simplicity, democratic design and natural textures. A mesh of eclectic and vintage style celebrates the home’s mid-century vibe, the deep orange 1960’s bricks, geometric patterned tiles and decorative metal porch railing throwbacks to its origins and the endearing features of its timeless appeal.
Hackett happens here every day. People and dogs and children with bikes all stop to chat for a minute or an hour. The neighbourhood children have built cubbies in the bush and played endless games on the oval. There have been countless cups of tea with so many new friends, in the company of art, music and baking. There have been a thousand cakes cooked! The family has watched the seasons change and their garden grow as fast as the children have. They have picked lemons, figs, apricots, raspberries and walnuts, and have watched the cockatoos take all the almonds for themselves.
Joy exists whenever you are present to experience the true nature of what ‘is’ in the present moment. It is in these moments at 142 Mackenzie Street Hackett that the soul of Canberra has been discovered and much joy has been found.
Find joy in discovering what makes your soul happy. Aly Aubrey
